Meteorology Training Center
Advanced Forecast Workshop

Our two week Advanced Forecast Workshop is back by popular demand. The Advanced Forecast Workshop is open to current college students, graduates, meteorologists and anyone else 18 years or older.

The workshop studies are rigorous and comprehensive. Some sessions may be difficult. This workshop will teach you meteorology skills and forecasting techniques you will carry with you the rest of your life. You will be amazed at how the Meteorology Training Center Advanced Forecast Workshop can be a career changing experience. We want to make you think like a top-gun forecaster, excelling in all that you do.
Advanced Forecast Workshop
The Advanced Forecast Workshop is a two week, 102 hour program featuring hands-on training, classroom time and real-time forecast experience. The vast majority of the material we cover is not found in any college or university campus, but we do teach you all you will need to know on the job at practically any private and government weather service. You will receive your certificate of completion after 102 successful hours and you will be able to use us as a reference.

Emphasis is on microscale meteorology, site-specific forecasting, the various pieces of information required by special users, and forecasting extreme events (such as hurricanes, flash floods, record temperatures, heavy snow, freezing rain, severe thunderstorms and downbursts).

Topics include: Forecast theory, satellite imagery interpretation, Doppler radar, weather analysis, meso- and microscale forecasting, industry-specific forecasting (power companies, aviation, agriculture, recreation, transportation and more), use and misuse of the forecast models, forecasting extreme weather events, fire weather... and more.

We believe in learning by doing - so expect to do a lot of work.

There will be at least one trip into the field.

The May and September sessions are held at an operating horse and cattle ranch 25 miles northeast of Rapid City. You will watch the meteorological lessons unfold across the plains and the mountains, both visible from the ranch. You will also be living and learning only a few miles from a primary track for supercells.
