Rapid Weather's
Guided Weather Expeditions
Photography / Education / Research

Snowstorm tours start November 18th and leave every Monday.

The Western High Plains offer you great views of thunderstorms.

Whether you are interested in watching thunderstorms develop, cloud and thunderstorm photography or basic research, we will help you in your quest.

Severe thunderstorms are relatively rare, but over the western high plains we frequently see isolated strong thunderstorms. The visibility is usually very good, allowing you to watch and photograph thunderstorms from a safe distance.

We'll use our expertise to identify the best thunderstorm days, notify you where and when we expect the thunderstorms, and then we'll guide you to them. We will usually give you a heads-up for favorable thunderstorm days 24 to 72 hours in advance.

We cover South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, eastern Montana, eastern Colorado, eastern Wyoming, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. We will guide you throughout the spring and summer, May through August.

Economy Tours

Snowstorm tours start late November!
Economy Snowstorm Tours
Have you ever wanted to see a blizzard? Or one of those really heavy lake-effect snows? Or an ice storm?

Rapid Weather will take you to the action, starting November 18th. We leave every Monday for a snowstorm destination. You can even be on "standby" and we'll call you 3 to 5 days before a big storm.

Guidelines and restrictions
Our tours are designed to be educational. Orientation includes a 3-hour training class and you will be educated along the way. We want you to have fun and we want it to be educational, too. All tours leave Monday morning at 9:00am and arrive back at Rapid City by Saturday evening.

  • We do not guarantee that you will see supercell thunderstorms; we will guide you to well developed thunderstorms, however. Supercell development is up to nature.
  • Danger is always around when traveling around thunderstorms. We will try our best to stay far enough away to avoid danger, but there is always a risk that we will run into trouble and get hit by a destructive storm.
  • You must sign a waiver and you must provide proof of health insurance.
  • You are guided at your own risk. You must make yourself available on the thunderstorm days we identify for the Anytime Tours. If, due to conditions beyond our control, there are no strong thunderstorms within our guide area during the spring and summer of 2002 and 2003, we will refund half of our guide fee. The Economy Tour offers no guarantee that we will see strong thunderstorms unless you allow us to choose the week, with two week's advance notice.
  • Payment in advance is required and must be made when booking for guided tours.
  • We strongly suggest that you book at least several weeks in advance.
  • We will provide transportation. Please limit your luggage to one suitcase.
  • If there is down time we will do some sightseeing.
  • Lodging will be provided. We may spend the night at small towns and out of the way places. Our destination each day is solely dependent on the weather.
Our goal is to work with you so that you get to see the weather you are looking for!
