Weather
Analysis
This 8-week course covers the basics of proper weather
map analysis. You will analyze surface and upper air maps in near-realtime.
You will receive specific guidance on what to analyze, how to analyze
the maps and the principles of analysis. You will also learn how to effectively
use satellite and radar imagery. You will also learn how to verify a computer
model's initial field to discover what the model may have missed. Most
exercises will need to be scanned and emailed to us - we provide the scanner
and it is yours to keep.
Time Requirement: 1 hour a day, 3 days a week for 8 weeks.
Technical Requirements:
PC with Internet connection and email, scanner

tax)
We'll provide a scanner and printer you keep for just $197 more ($294
total / SD residents add $17.64 sales tax)
Specialized Site-Specific Weather
Forecasting
Learn how to forecast for areas as small as 25 square miles.
You will learn how to forecast precipitation amounts, hourly temperatures,
wind direction and windspeed, timing of wind shifts, cloud bases and coverage,
precipitation type and much more. These are the types of forecasts used
in aviation, construction, pollution control, fire forecasting and for
power companies.
You will need a working knowledge of meteorology, preferably a degree
in meteorology.
Time requirement: 1 to 2 hours a day, 3 days a week for 6 weeks
Technical Requirements: E-mail and Internet access

tax)
Severe Weather Forecasting
Learn how to forecast extreme snow, wind, rain and thunderstorm
events. This course covers the prediction of fast-breaking, difficult
to predict weather events. You will learn how to forecast rapid temperature
changes, record temperatures, falling daytime temperatures and rising
night time temperatures. You also learn about strong wind events such
as severe thunderstorms and downslope winds, heavy rain events, heavy
snow events and freezing rain episodes.
Time requirement: 6 hours a week for 6 weeks

Cost: $197 ($208.82 for South Dakota residents - includes sales
tax)
Synoptic Scale Weather Forecasting
You will learn the elements of synoptic scale analysis
as well as the concepts behind the numerical prediction models such as
the RUC, Eta and GFS. You will develop synoptic scale forecasts for clouds,
visibility, precipitation (and precipitation types), and temperature.
You will learn the the general principles of large scale motions and the
movement of weather systems.
