Internships
Summer internships are available during university or graduate school summer breaks, but are also available throughout the year. The intern forecaster role is designed for candidates currently pursuing a college or university degree and the intern associate role is designed for candidates currently pursuing a MS or advanced degree.

Our divisions provide both intern forecasters and associates with a comprehensive professional and educational experience – whether on our operational forecasting desks, amidst the excitement of the day, or at the heart of support for large scale projects.

The intern forecaster and associate programs run for approximately 10 weeks, depending on the division, and are located at Rapid City, South Dakota. While on the job as an intern, you will be given real responsibilities. Our internships are designed to give you a sense of what you would be doing day to day as a full-time Rapid Weather or Meteorology Training Center employee or an employee at any other weather service.

Summer Internship candidates should refer to the following timeline for information about when to apply:
December/January/February/March -- Take the Forecast Institute LR Edition (not the "lite" edition)
February/March/April/May -- Take the Advanced Online Forecast Training course
March/April -- Request application materials, start interview process

Internship candidates for other times of the year should refer to the following timeline for information about when to apply:
Five months before internship -- Start the Forecast Institute LR Edition (not the "lite" edition)
Three months before the internship -- Take the Advanced Online Forecast Training course
Two months before the internship -- Request application materials, start interview process

For example: If you want to start an internship on June 1, you must start the LR Edition no later than December 1, start the Advanced online training no later than February 1 and request an application no later than March 1.

Successful candidates will (1) have completed both courses, (2) have completed an application with supporting documents and (3) completed the interview process. Candidates will be notified of their selection in May.

Internship roles are typically suited to those planning on graduating from college or university with little or no prior work experience and who are looking for an entry level role. Interns learn a great deal about our businesses, develop important relationships and build the skills necessary to carry them through to the next level of their careers.

All of our interns joining the program receive initial training, followed by division- or department-specific training over varying lengths of time. Our goal is to familiarize you with the skills and knowledge necessary to become an integral member of our team or as part of any other operational meteorology organization.

At Rapid Weather and the Meteorology Training Center we rely on everyone to add to our success. Early in your intership, you will be working directly with senior meteorologists and side-by-side with the experts in our firm.
