Basic Course Advanced Course
Week 1 • Basic weather analysis Week 1 • Forecast methodology, piecing information together to make a forecast. Knowing your user. Realtime verification of models.
Week 2 • Weather Analysis • Fronts and upper level features. Week 2 • Model bias: using it to your advantage; climatology and local effects.
Week 3 • Weather Analysis • Composite charts and model basics. Week 3 • Rare event forecasting: severe thunderstorms, freezing rain, high wind, heavy snow, excessive rain/flood.
Week 4 • Basics of satellite interpretation and analysis of the models; Model limitations and building a forecast weather map. Week 4 • Forecasting mesoscale/microscale events using models and head knowledge; application to site•specific forecasting.
Week 5 • Drawing forecast maps, more on the models, thinking through the forecast. Week 5 • Continuation of week 4 material.
Week 6 • More forecast maps and limits of weather forecasting; Weather forecasts • who is using them and what do they want to know.      Week 6 • Forecast verification, quality control, ethical questions, Doppler radar and remote sensing.
Week 7 • Other model data and tools.
Week 8 • Other general forecasting and parsing of data to make the forecasts.
